Watertown High Girls Track: Watertown 82,
Belmont 49
The Watertown High girls outdoor
track team had little trouble with their rivals from Belmont on Tuesday.
"This was a very good performance,"
girls head coach David Mastro said. "The girls were hitting on all strides."
The visiting Raiders totaled 40
points in the running events and 42 in the field events on route to their
second win of the season. They totaled a season-high ten individual wins while
sweeping two events including the high jump and the javelin.
Coming in first place were Katie

The 4 x 1 relay foursome of Kelly,

additional five points, winning that race in 52.5.
Those earning second place points
included Calista Diehl in the two mile (13:51), Jamie Russo
in the mile (personal best time of 5:56), Michelle Poirier in the 800
meters (2:40.34), Talia Flores in both the high jump (4-8) and the

Carlson in the high jump (4-6), Roop Kaur in the discus (68-4), and Bianca
Jones in the javelin (66- 8).
"The girls were very excited about
this win," Mastro said. "They pushed themselves and worked really well. I
thought they showed the type of potential they have."
Watertown, 2-6, will complete their
May 4 suspended meet with Wakefield on Thursday at Victory Field. The Raiders
were leading 53-46 with five events left.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Watertown 86,
Belmont 50
The Watertown High boys outdoor
track team earned their third win of the year in convincing fashion following
an 86-50 win at Belmont on Tuesday.
"The boys did a very good job,"
Watertown head coach Tom Wittenhagen said. "Coming into this meet I thought
we'd score somewhere in the mid seventies so it was nice to exceed
expectations."
The boys had seven individual wins
on the day including three from Kevin O'Laughlin. The senior won the 400
meter hurdles (59.2 seconds), the high jump (personal best distance of 6 feet)
and the triple jump (39-10).
Also winning their events were Kris
Stinehart in both the shot-put (43-10) and discus (116- 3), Tim Moan
in the 110 meter hurdles (14.8), and Sean McCusker in the javelin
(134-5).
Luke McElroy also had an excellent day as he came up with two second
place finishes that both qualified him for states. He finished with a time of
23 seconds in the 200 while completing a distance of 20-11 in the long jump.
"We held our own in the running
events but the way we performed in the jumps and throws was the key to this
win," Wittenhagen said.
Watertown, 3-5, will complete their
May 4 suspended meet with Wakefield on Thursday at Victory Field. At the time
the rain halted the event, the Raiders were trailing 61-34.
Both Raider teams travel to Belmont
for a dual meet tomorrow before finishing the regular season Thursday at home
with the completion of a Wakefield meet that had been suspended due to rain.
Update: May 21, 2010:
WATERTOWN HIGH: Raiders win two events at
Division 4 State Relays
The Watertown High boys shuttle
hurdles team of seniors Nathan Wilson-Braun, Kevin O'Laughlin, Tim Moan and
junior James Holland set a Division 4 State Relays record in winning the event
at this weekend's competition in Abington.
The team clocked 63.45 seconds,
which was .35 seconds better than previous mark of 63.7 that a team from East
Bridgewater held for two years, and six seconds better than the next team in
the race.
"Our time was the
second-fastest in the state coming in so we knew we'd have a good shot at
it," Watertown coach Tom Wittenhagen said. "This is one of the best
teams in the state and a team that was ranked nationally indoors."
The Watertown girls also had a
winner as the 4x100 team of sophomore Meaghan Kelly, junior Rachel Thomas,
sophomore Lauren Basille and freshman Christelle Madou set a school record of
52.05 seconds.
The Raider boys finished third in
the team scores despite losing a top competitor to a knee injury in practice
last week. The Raider girls finished eighth and also overcame a key injury.
Watertown was second in the boys
high jump as O'Laughlin, Moan and senior Luke McElroy combined for 17 feet, 2
inches. The Raiders were also second in the 4x100 where Wilson-Braun teamed
with senior Chris McDermott, senior Brian Dupuis and McElroy in 45.41.
O'Laughlin, Wilson-Braun and Holland
were third in the triple jump at 36.64 meters. The 4x200 team of Moan, senior
Brendan Kuo, Dupuis and McElroy was fourth in 1:34.89. The shot put team of
senior Kris Stinehart, senior Dan McGrath and freshman Pat Lally was fourth at
36.91 meters. The sprint medley team of senior Tyler Moynihan, McDermott,
senior Varant Chiloyan and senior Ken Szubzda was fifth in 3:56.67.
The Raider girls were also third in
the 4x200 relay with the team of Kelly, Thomas, junior Katie Carlson and
Basille breaking another school record in running 1:52.
Watertown was fifth in the 4x1,600
as sophomore Annalise DeBaie, sophomore Jaime Russo, sophomore Waleska Alves
and sophomore Calista Diehl ran 24:45.74. The Raiders also took sixth in the
high jump as Carlson, junior Brianna Natale and Thomas combined to leap 13-5.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Watertown 74,
Winchester 62
The Watertown High girls outdoor
track team came through with their first win of the season after an impressive
performance over Winchester at Victory Field on Tuesday.
"The girls just stepped it up,"
Watertown head coach David Mastro said. "This was a very nice win for us. After
the field events we were tied but we pulled away nicely in the running events."
Rachel Thomas was a big reason the locals were able to come away with
their first victory of the spring. The junior won all three of her events
totaling 15 points. In the high jump Thomas won with a distance of 4 feet 10
inches while also leading the pack in both the 100 meters (12.8 seconds), and
the 200 meters (26.9).
Those also coming through with first
place finishes for the Raiders included Talia Flores in both the long
jump (15-10) and the 400 meters (64.3), Meaghan Kelly in the triple jump
(personal best distance of 31-7), Julia Basile in the shot-put (personal
best throw of 33-1), Waleska Alves in the two mile (13:12), and the 4 x
1 relay team of Kelly, Christelle Madou, Lauren Basile, and Julia
Patsios.
"Winning the 4 x 1 was big for us,"
Masto said. "I knew we had it won when we took that race."
Coming in second place for the
Raiders were Bianca Jones in the 400 meters (68.7), Michelle Poirier
in the 800 meters (2:40), Kelly in the 100 meter hurdles (16.8), Analise
DeBaie in the mile (6:04), Katie Carlson in the 400 meters (73.4), Roop
Kaur in the discus (77-4), and Lauren Basile in both the long jump
(14-11 1/2) and the 100 meters (personal best time of 13 seconds).
"I thought Lauren had a really great
meet for us," Mastro said of the sophomore. "As a matter of fact both Basile
girls have been outstanding lately."
Those earning third place points on
the day for Watertown included Carlson in the high jump (4-6), Brianna
Natale in the triple jump (personal best distance of 31-1 1/2), Jones in
the javelin (72-6), and Jamie Russo in the two mile (13:30).
"I am very pleased to see that
we are getting good times and we are getting stronger," Mastro added.
Watertown, 1-6, will participate in
the state relays on Saturday in Abington before they go to Belmont for their
last scheduled dual meet of the season on Tuesday, May 18.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Winchester
82, Watertown 54
The Watertown High boys outdoor
track team had some good performances but it wasn't quite enough to knock off a
very good Winchester team on Tuesday at Victory Field.
"The difference in this meet was
that we were pretty good while Winchester was very good," Watertown head coach
Tom Wittenhagen said after the 82-54 setback.
The Raiders had five individual
winners on the day including Kevin O'Laughlin in the triple jump
(40 feet 3 inches), Kris Stinehart in the shot-put (44-1), Sean
McCusker in the javelin (136-1), James Holland in the 400 meters
(52.6 seconds), and Tim Moan in the hurdles (14.4).
"Tim's performance was especially
impressive," Wittenhagen said. "That was his fastest time ever."
The 4 x 4 relay team of Tyler
Moynihan, Kenny Szubzda, Varant Chiloyan, and Holland also
gave the team five more points winning their race in a time of 3:49.01.
"We are hoping coming into this meet
that we could make it a close one," Wittenhagen added. "But Winchester [6-1]
was just very good today."
Pat Lally was the Raiders most improved performer of the week, coming
up with personal bests in both the shot-put as well as the javelin.
Watertown, 2-5, will next
participate in the State Relays in Abington on Saturday. Despite 42 Division
Four schools expecting to show up, Wittenhagen is very confident his team will
finish very high.
"We should definitely finish in the
top five," he said.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Stoneham 85,
Watertown 51
The Watertown High girls outdoor
track team continues to search for their first win of the season.
"Once again we had some very good
performances," Watertown girls head coach David Mastro said after a loss to
Stoneham on Thursday. "But it's hard to win meets with our lack of depth. But I
thought overall we had a good meet. The girls pushed themselves as hard as they
could and I can't ask for more than that."
Rachel Thomas led the Raiders with 15 points. She won all three of her
events: The 100 meters (12.6 seconds), the 200 meters (27), and the high jump (five
feet). Other first place finishes came from Meaghan Kelly in the 100
meter hurdles (season best time of 16.4), and Talia Flores in both the
400 meters (62) and the long jump (15-5 3/4).
Coming in second for the locals were
Waleska Alves in the two mile (13:30), Lauren Basile in the long
jump (14-7), Kelly in the triple jump (first loss of season, 31-4 1/4), and Julia
Basile in the shot-put (30-5). Those earning third place points were Katie
Carlson in the 400 meters (personal best and state qualifying time of 73), Analise
DeBaie in the mile (6:14), Lauren Basile in the 100 meters (state
qualifying time of 13.1), Krysta Bruggers in the 200 meters (personal
best time of 29.5), Brianna Natale in the triple jump (30-3), Shannon
McNally in the shot-put (28-1 3/4), Bianca Jones in the javelin
(76-2), and Roop Kaur in the discus (83-4).
"I got to mention Roop for her
effort," Mastro said after the meet. "She really has been outstanding for us in
the discus."
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Watertown 83,
Stoneham 53
Coach Tom Wittenhagen called it his
team’’s best dual meet in three years.
"Going into this meet I predicted that
we would win by two points," the Raider head coach said after his boys track
team defeated visiting Stoneham 83-53 on Thursday. "So I would call it a good
day when you win by 28 more points than you expect."
Out of the 14 individual meets, the
Raiders won ten and also came away with both relay events.
"There were a lot of surprises,"
Wittenhagen said. "Some of the boys really exceeded expectations. As far as
dual meets go this was our best in quite a while."
One of those boys who pleasantly
surprised his head mentor was Sean McCusker, who won the javelin with a
hurl of 140 feet 5 inches. The sophomore threw ten feet farther than his
previous best.
"I figured him to come in third,"
Wittenhagen said. "His performance really helped turn the meet around for us."
Another Raider who came up big on
the day was senior Kevin O'Laughlin, who won all three of his events:
The 400 meter hurdles (58.6 seconds), the triple jump (41-1), and the high jump
(5-10).
Other first place finishers included
Erik Hoiseth in the two mile (first varsity win, 11:27.02), Luke
McElroy in the long jump (18-9), Kris Stinehart in the shot-put
(season best 45-3), Tim Moan in the hurdles (14.9), Chris McDermott
in the 100 meters (11.1), and James Holland in the 400 meters (53.2).
The 4 x 4 relay team of Tyler
Moynihan, Varant Chiloyan, Kenny Szubzda and Holland won
their race in a time of 3:54.06 while the 4 x 1 foursome of McDermott, Brendan
Kuo, Brian Dupuis and McElroy gave Watertown another unexpected five
points with a first place time of 45.6
"On paper their 4x1 relay team was
faster than ours," Wittenhagen said. "But the boys ran a great race and we
ended up winning by 1/10 of a second."
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown Girls Track: Versus Wakefield
(suspended by rain)
They haven't officially gotten their
first win, but when the rains came the Watertown High girls track team was on
the verge of recording their first victory of the spring.
The Raiders were leading their
Wakefield opponents 53-46 with five events left.
"I am confident we can pull this one
off," Watertown head coach Dave Mastro said referring to when the two teams
resume their festivities on Thursday, May 13. "We've got some very good
athletes competing in the remaining events."
Those helping Watertown build their
lead with first place finishes were Katie Carlson in the 400 meter
hurdles (73.3 seconds), Rachel Thomas in both the high jump (5
feet) and the 100 meters (13.2), Meaghan Kelly in the triple jump (31-4
1/2), Lauren Basile in the long jump (15-2 1/2), Jamie
Russo in the mile (6:04), and Waleska Alves in the two mile (13.06)
Coming in second place for the
Raiders were Talia Flores in the long jump (14-10 1/2), Basile in the
shot-put (30-5), and Analise DeBaie in the two mile (13.28). Those
earning third place points included Calista Diehl in the mile (6:25), Brianna
Natale in the triple jump (30-3 1/2), Basile in the 100 meters (13.7),
and Bianca Jones in the javelin (72-2).
"The girls did very well," Mastro
said. "We should be able to finish this one off on a positive note."
Freshman/sophomore meet
Also on Saturday Watertown was
represented well again at the freshmen/sophomore meet held in Woburn. DeBaie
and Russo finished fifth and sixth respectively in the mile, Shannon McNally
finished third in the shot-put, and Hannah Helfner finished fifth in the
javelin.
Watertown, 0-5, will take on
Stoneham in a make-up meet on Thursday May 6.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Kevin
O'Laughlin breaks school record
The Watertown High boys track team
will have an uphill battle when their suspended meet with Wakefield resumes
Thursday, May 13. When the rains halted Tuesday's meet the locals were down
61-34.
"We still have a chance," Watertown
boys head coach Tom Wittenhagen said. "We are favored in most of the remaining
meets. On paper I think we can make it very close despite being down almost 30
points."
Win or lose the final outcome won't
take away the historic efforts from Kevin O'Loughlin in the 400 meter
hurdles. The senior broke the school record with his first place time of 58.5
second.
"This is actually the second school
record he has broken this year," Wittenhagen said noting that O'Loughlin also
broke the school's triple jump record earlier in the season. "It's impressive
enough to break one record."
The most unfortunate event of the
day, however, came when one of the Raiders was disqualified for uttering a
swear. The Raider, who had rallied from a long way to come back and win the
race at the finish line, swore in hearing distance of the Wakefield coach and
the two referees. That calls for an automatic disqualification.
"It really was an unfortunate thing
because he actually swore in happiness and wasn't directing a profanity at
anyone," Wittenhagen said of his runner. "But rules are rules and I really
can't blame anyone for the disqualification."
Watertown, 1-4, will next face
Stoneham in a make-up meet on Thursday, May 6.
Middlesex League freshman/sophomore
meet
This past Saturday at Lexington the
Raiders had two top four finishes: Sean McCusker coming in second in the
javelin (131 feet) and John Arslanian finishing fourth in the discus
(86).
Rachel Thomas led the Watertown girls' contingent with a fourth in the
high jump at 5-0 at the Weston Twilight Meet held under the lights Saturday
night. Talia Flores was fifth in the 400 in 61.49 and 10th in the long
jump at 16-3. The Raider 4x100 relay team of Thomas, Flores, Lauren Basile
and Meaghan Kelly was fifth in 52.23. (Broke the school Record)
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Lexington
85, Watertown 46
The Watertown High girls track team
remained winless at Lexington on Tuesday but the Raiders continue to please
their head coach with their efforts.
"I feel we are getting better and
stronger with each meet," Mastro said. "We had a lot of injuries and still did
well. We are a young team but we are a pretty good team when we are all
healthy."
Rachel Thomas led the way for the locals with three first place finishes.
She captured the 100 meters (12.8 seconds), the 200 meters (57.1), and the high
jump (4 feet 10 inches) for an impressive 15 point day.
Others who won their events included
Meghan Kelly in the triple jump (personal best distance of 31-4), and Julia
Basile in the shot-put (28-2).
Those earning second place points
included Katie Carlson in the 400 meter hurdles (74.4), Kelly in the 100
meter hurdles (personal best time of 16.7), Roop Kaur in the discus
(75-6), Carlson in the high jump (4-6) and Bianca Jones in the javelin
(69-7) while third place points came from Analise DeBaie in the mile
(personal best time of 6:03), Flores in both the 400 meters (64.2) and long
jump (14-3) and Brianna Natale in the triple jump (29-7 1/2).
Not scoring but coming up with a
solid performance in the mile was Jamie Russo, who finished fourth with
a personal best time of 6:04. That's 18 seconds off her previous mark.
Watertown, 0-4, will take on Woburn
on Tuesday, April 27.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Reading 86,
Watertown 50
The Watertown High girls track team
racked up some impressive points in a loss at Reading on Tuesday.
"I don’’t think I have ever coached a
team that scored 50 points against Reading," Watertown girls outdoor track
coach Dave Mastro said. "We really had a very good day. It was one of our
better showings ever against Reading."
Watertown won seven events on the
day including two from Meghan Kelly who captured the 100 meter hurdles
in a state qualifying time of 17.4 second while also winning the triple jump
with a distance of 30 feet 9 inches.
Rachel Thomas also captured two events winning the high jump in 4-11 and
the 100 meter-dash in a time of 12.3. That performance is only .05 seconds off
the school record.
Not to be outdone was Talia Flores,
who also finished first twice. In the 200 meters Flores won the race in 28
seconds before winning the long jump with a state qualifying distance of 16-7
1/4.
"I thought a lot of girls did well
for us but I really have to commend Talia, Rachel, and Meghan for the way they
performed," Mastro said. "Those three girls were outstanding."
The 4x1 relay team rounded out the
first place performances as Lyndsay Daley, Thomas, Lauren Basile
and Flores won the race in 53.7.
"Seven wins is a lot against
Reading,” Mastro said. “I was ecstatic to see that."
Those earning second place points
for the Raiders included Bianca Jones in the 400 meters (65.9), Analise
DeBaie in the two mile (13.37), Katie Carlson in the high jump
(4-8), and Julia Basile in the shot-put (28-4 1/2) while coming in third
were Roop Kaur in the discus (65), Shannon McNally in the
shot-put (27-1 1/4), and Basile in the 100 meter-dash (13.6).
Watertown, 0-3, will travel to
Lexington on Tuesday.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Reading 82,
Watertown 54
The Watertown boys track team fell
to 1-2 on the season, but not before putting in an impressive outing against
Reading.
"We were close for a while and any
time you can do that against a team like Reading you’’re doing well," head coach
Tom Wittenhagen said. "I was very pleased with the meet."
Kevin O'Loughlin highlighted the day's performances for the Raiders with a
school record distance of 42 feet 1 inch in the triple jump.
"The ironic thing is that he ended
up in second in that event," Wittenhagen said noting how talented Reading is. "But Kevin was outstanding."
O'Loughlin did however win the high
jump with a distance of 5-8 while other individual winners also included Tim
Moan in both the 40-meter-hurdles (61.1) and 110-meter hurdles (15.3), and Kris
Stinehart in both the shot-put (44-4) and the discus (109).
The relay squads were also very
impressive as both the 4x100 foursome of Chris McDermott, Brendan Kuo,
Ryan DuPuis, and Barant Chiloyan (47.2) and the team of Tyler
Monahan, O'Loughlin, Kuo, and James Holland (3:37.08) not only won
their respective races but both qualified for states.
Watertown, 1-2, will take on
Lexington on Tuesday.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Burlington
84, Watertown 47
The Watertown High girls outdoor
track team fell to 0-2 at Burlington on Tuesday.
"I was still pleased with the
girls," Watertown coach Dave Mastro said. "We got almost as many points against
Burlington as we did against Melrose and Burlington is one of the top teams in
the league. That shows me we are improving."
In the track events the Lady Raiders
earned 27 points including points from Katie Carlson in the 400 meter
hurdles, (second, 73.7 seconds), Analise DeBaie in the mile (second,
6:14), Meghan Kelly in both the 100 meter high hurdles (second, 17.6)
and the 200 meters (second, 28.6), Rachel Thomas in the 100 meter dash
(first, 13.1), Lauren Basile in the 100 meter hurdles (first, 13.7), Michelle
Poirier in the 400 meters (third, 68), Jessica Doggett in the two
mile (second, 13:29), and the 4 x 1 relay team of Lyndsay Daley, Thomas,
Basile, and Talia Flores (first, 53.4).
Points from the field events came
from Thomas in the high jump (first, 5 feet), Flores in the long jump (14-7
1/2), Basile in the long jump (third, 13-10), Kelly in the triple jump (first,
29- 10 1/4), Natale in the triple jump (28), and Shannon McNally in the
shot-put (second with a personal best distance of 29-1 1/4).
"I feel we are getting better and
that’’s what it's all about," Mastro said.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Burlington
86, Watertown 50
The Watertown High boys track team
(1-1) had seven first place finishes on Tuesday but it wasn't nearly enough to
overcome a very talented Burlington squad.
"Burlington is certainly one of the
stronger team in the Middlesex League," Watertown head coach Tom Wittenhagen
said. "But I was pleased. I thought we had some nice performances."
Three Raiders captured two events
each. They included senior Tim Moan in both the long jump (18 feet 7
inches) and 100 meter hurdles (14.7 seconds), junior James Holland in
the 200 (23.9) and 400 meter hurdles (60.8), and senior Kevin O'Loughlin
in the high jump (5-9) and the triple jump (40-1 1/2).
Senior Brendan Kuo got the
other Raider victory when he won the 400 meters.
"It's early in the season and
we are still developing," Wittenhagen added. "But I am seeing some of the
younger boys start to perform well so I would say things are looking up."
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Girls Track: Melrose 86,
Watertown 50
Sophomore Meghan Kelly had a first place and two second-places in
helping pace the Watertown girls track team in its 86-50 season-opening loss to
Melrose at Victory Field last Thursday.
Kelly won the triple jump at 30 feet, 4 1/2 inches, and was second in both
the high hurdles and the 200 meters.
Junior Rachel Thomas won the high jump at 4-8, was second in the dash
and was on the winning 4x100 relay team. She was joined on the relay by junior Lyndsay
Daley, sophomore Lauren Basile and sophomore Talia Flores on
the quarter that clocked 53.2.
Update: May 21, 2010:
Watertown High Boys Track: Watertown 83,
Melrose 53
By Frank Santarpio, correspondent
Wicked Local Watertown
It's safe to say Tim Moan had
himself a day to remember.
Winning all three of his events to
lead the Watertown High boys outdoor track team to an 83-53 win over visiting
Melrose in their season opener on Thursday only tells some of the senior's
story.
More importantly the
soon-to-be-named 2010 valedictorian was accepted to attend one of the premier
universities in the country.
"Right after the meet he found out
he was accepted to go to Harvard", Watertown head boys outdoor track coach Tom
Wittenhagen, who also noted that Moan was named the MIAA student of the month
in February, said. "This couldn't happen to a nicer kid. He's a wonderful
person who comes from a wonderful family."
Moan captured the 110-meter hurdles
in 15.2 seconds, won the high jump in 5 feet 7 inches, and finished off
the trifecta with a victory in the long jump with a distance of 18-7.
However, there were plenty more
victories by the Raiders in this meet as most of their points came via first
place finishes.
Others who won their events included
Kevin O'Loughlin in the 400-meter hurdles (60.5) and the triple jump

the two mile (11:35), Kris Stinehart in the discus (105-4), David
Barrioneuvo in the javelin (123-9), and winning his first race, sophomore Kevin
Eskici in the mile (5:14).
"It was a good way to start the
season," Wittenhagen said. "I saw a lot of very nice performances."
The Raiders, 1-0, will host
Burlington on Tuesday, April 6.
Once again the Watertown High girls track team put in another impressive effort at the Middlesex League individual championship meet on Wednesday at the ReggieLewisCenter.
“I really can’’t say enough about how pleased I am,” Watertown girls head coach Dave Mastro said. “They just continue to make me proud.”
Headlining the day’’s performances for Watertown was the effort from Rachel Thomas in the high jump. The junior not only won the event but she broke her own school record with a distance of 5 feet 2 inches. Thomas also did herself proud in the dash with a third place overall finish after running the race in a time of 7.66 seconds.
Others who scored points for the Raiders on the day included Talia Flores in both the 300 (fourth place, school record time of 43.66) and the long jump (sixth, 14-4), and freshman Christelle Madou in the dash (7.98).
The girls also put in an impressive effort in the mile when Jessica Doggett (season best time of 5:58), Waleska Alves (personal best time of 6:08), and Calista Diehl, (personal best time of 6:13) all hit their peak while senior Kelsey Prendergast also ran a personal best time of 3:32 in the 1,000.
“Kelsey was just terrific,” Mastro added. “She really ran a great race.”
Some of the girls will take part in this weekend’’s festivities at the ReggieLewisCenter with the state coaches meet taking place on Saturday followed by the elite state relay meet on Sunday. The Raiders will then have their final dual meet of the year against Winchester on Feb. 10.
The boys who represented Watertown High at the Middlesex League Individual championship track meet did themselves proud on Wednesday as they combined to collect 45 points.
“We left the Reggie Lewis track pretty pleased with what we accomplished,” Raider boys track coach Tom Wittenhagen said. “We had five boys qualify for states and had nine personal bests.”
The most memorable moment of the day came in the 55-meter hurdles when senior Nathan Wilson-Braun won the event in a time of 7.72 seconds. His performance was not only the second-best ever in school history but it was also the second-best time in the state this year.
“And the beauty of it is he still has time to improve on that,” Wittenhagen said.
Also winning on the day was the 4 x 200 relay team of Wilson-Braun, Luke McElroy, James Holland, and Tim Moan who captured the race in a time of 1:35.10 The foursome also combined to record the second best time in school history.
Others who put points on the board for Watertown included McElroy in the high jump (third, 5-9), Moan in the 55-meter hurdles (third, 8.02), Wilson-Brown in the long jump (fourth, 19-2), Holland in the 300 (fifth, 37.99), Kenny Szubzda in the mile (fifth, 4:49.02), Dan McGrath in the shot-put (fifth, 43-5), and Steve Jewers in the shot-put (sixth, 43-1).
Some of these boys will travel back to the Reggie Lewis facility this weekend to take part in the state coaches meet on Saturday and the state relay elite meet on Sunday
The Watertown girls 4x50 relay team finished one one-thousandth of a second ahead of the third-place team for the top Raiders finish during Saturday's Division 4 State Relays at the ReggieLewisCenter.
The squad of junior Rachel Thomas, freshman Christelle Madou, junior Caroline Stewart and sophomore Lauren Basile finished in 25.598 seconds and was awarded second on a photo-finish lean at the wire.
The team of Thomas, sophomore Talia Flores and junior Brianna Natale was fourth in the high jump relay at 14-4, with Thomas' 5-foot-1 ranking as a PR and the second-highest jump of any competitor. Flores, Thomas, Stewart and Basille broke a school record in the 4x200 with a fifth in 1:52.36. Flores also qualified for States with a long jump of 15-2 3/4 in helping the long jump relay to sixth at 41-6 1/2, along with Stewart and senior Kelsey Prendergast.
“It was a good day for us,'” Watertown coach David Mastro said.“When you think that only three seniors ran with us today, it bodes really well for the future. It's exciting to show how strong this team can be.”
Watertown takes part in the Middlesex League All-Star meet Wednesday at Reggie Lewis.
There were 42 schools at the Division Four State Relay meet at the ReggieLewisCenter on Saturday but that didn’’t prevent the Watertown High boys track team from finishing in the top three. While proving they are among the state’’s best in Division Four, the Raiders collected 33 points on the day including two first place finishes.
“I have looked back more than 30 years and none of those teams finished with as many points as this team did this year at the state relays,” Watertown high boys track coach Tom Wittenhagen said. “It was a great performance and it certainly was encouraging to know we have a shot at doing something special when the state meet rolls around.”
The Raiders won both the shot-put relays and the 4 x 200 relays. In the shot-put Kris Stinehart, Steve Jewers, and Dan McGrath had a distance of 124 feet 1 inch to finish better than any other squad while the foursome of Nathan Wilson-Braun, Luke McElroy, James Holland, and Tim Moan captured the 4 x 200 in a time of 1:36.15.
“I am very pleased we had two winners,” Wittenhagen said. “It’’s special we have some kids now going to the Elite Relays.”
Also collecting points for the Raiders were McElroy, Wilson-Braun, and Moan in the long jump relay (third place with a distance of 53-7), Wilson-Braun, Moan, McElroy, and Chris McDermott in the 4 x 50 shuttle dash (third, 23.03 seconds), and Kenny Szubzda, McDermott, Eric Yakuze, and Tyler Moynihan in the sprint medley relay (sixth, 1:52.05).

WatertownHigh School's Rachel Thomas soars at track and in the classroom with hard work and talent

WATERTOWN —
Long after Rachel Thomas graduates, it is doubtful Watertown High girls head track coach Dave Mastro will ever forget her.
For three years, the 17-year old junior has done everything and more of what a coach asks.
“As long as I've known her, she has always given everything she has,” Mastro said. “She always works extremely hard, and because of that has become a very talented athlete. She will also do anything you ask of her and will always put the team ahead of herself.
“Besides all of that, she is simply a great kid; one of the nicest kids you'll ever meet. I wish I had 20 Rachel Thomases on the team. We would be state champions if we did. I just love having her around,” he added.
When Thomas first joined the track team as a freshman, Mastro remembers her as a shy girl who lacked confidence. Today, though, that has all changed. She is the team's most consistent scorer. She excels in the dash, the 300 meters, and especially the high jump.
“She just fell in love with that event,” Mastro said. “As time went on, she just found her groove.”
Last year, Thomas not only went to All-States in the high jump, but she also broke the all-time girls school record with a leap of 5 feet 1 inch. This year, she has already qualified for states and is hoping for a return visit to the All-State meet. She has also never failed to place in the high jump in any meet this season.
“I remember my freshman year, I was barely jumping 4-3,” said Thomas. “But coach Mastro really helped me get better. He's a great coach because he’’’’s so encouraging and you can ask him anything. He will also stay late just to help you get better.”
Thomas, who was born in Barbados and moved to Watertown when she was in the fifth grade, first became interested in track as a young girl and has always enjoyed running. She ran track in middle school, but she has gotten a lot faster in high school. This season, she has also qualified for states in the dash, and has always been an extremely valuable member of the relay teams.
“I never thought I could be as fast as I am,” Thomas said. “But like I said, coach Mastro and coach Jacoppo [assistant coach John Jacoppo] have really taught me well.”
Besides her talent, Mastro is also a big admirer of Thomas’’’’ leadership qualities. The head coach noted that she has developed a true winning spirit and that she hates to lose. Mastro also said he loves the way Thomas motivates the other kids on the team and brings out the best in all of them.
“I feel like you should always be encouraging,” said Thomas, who is also an excellent student and would someday like to be a pediatrician or a teacher. “Sometimes I feel the other girls don't realize how good they are.”
This year's girls track team is very young, but has looked impressive in some of its head-to-head dual meets. They recently gave Woburn a scare despite some injuries and were finally able to beat Belmont for the first time since the 2001-2002 season. The victory over their rivals was one of Thomas’’’’ favorite memories because the team was so happy with the win.
“The girls on my team sometimes don't see their own potential,” Thomas said. “That's why I love encouraging them. I'd love to see us all improve.”
Thomas really enjoys her track teammates, and although she is a consistent member of the winter and spring squads, it is a tough decision for her in the fall whether to join the cross country team because she also has a strong interest in soccer. She played soccer for the Raiders her freshman and sophomore seasons before running cross country this past fall.
“I really love soccer, too,” she said. “I haven't decided yet what to do next fall.”
Lately, though, whatever sport she plays in Thomas has been doing so in some pain. She has developed some bad knees, and it has gotten to the point where she has started physical therapy. Yet, remarkably she still somehow continues to score points in every meet while refusing to take time off.
“I'm so thankful for the support I have gotten since I joined this team that I don’’’’t want to let my teammates down,” she said.
Her teammates and coaches know, however, that is something she is incapable of doing.
“She has already meant so much to the program,” Mastro said.

Watertown High School girls track: Woburn 52, Watertown 34
A great effort from the Watertown High girls track team fell a little short on Saturday in a 52-34 loss to Woburn at ReadingHigh School.
“We haven’’t had this many points against Woburn in a long time,” Coach Dave Mastro said. “But the real impressive thing about that was that we weren’’t completely healthy. Some couldn’’t come to the meet and others performed with injuries. Even the Woburn coach told me he couldn’’t believe our effort and how much we improved over last year.”
Those earning first place points for the Raiders included Jessica Doggett in the two mile (13:41), Rachel Thomas in the high jump (4-8), and Kelsey Prendergast in the 1,000 meters.
“We had a lot of girls perform very well today but Kelsey’’s was the race of the day,” Mastro said. “She was boxed in with about six other runners but out-sprinted the leader at the very end.”
Coming in second for Watertown were Talia Flores in both the 600 meters (1:51) and the high jump (4-4), Calista Diehl in the mile (personal best 6:24), Brianna Natale in the 55 meter-hurdles (10:59), Christelle Madou in the 55 meters (8.08), and Celie Harvey-McGregor in the shot-put (26-1 1/4) while third place finishes came from Angela Harrington in the 55 meter-hurdles (10.68) and Lauren Basile in the 55 meters.
“I thought the kids were awesome today,” Mastro added. “They had a lot to overcome and came up with a great performance.”

Burlington 49 1/2, Watertown 36 1/2
The Watertown High boys track team (4-3) once again gave a very good team a run for their money in a 49 1/2- 36 1/2 loss to Burlington in a meet held in Woburn on Tuesday.
The Raiders, who were forced to take on the best teams in the Middlesex League due to their top-five finish at the opening day league meet, at the very least are proving they can compete with the league’’s best.
“We really had some wonderful performances,” said Watertown boys head coach Tom Wittenhagen, who also noted the squad forfeited the relay after they knew they would fall a little short even if they won the race. “It really was a very close meet against a very strong team.”
Among the outstanding performances were the efforts of Nathan Wilson-Braun in the 55-meter hurdles. Not only did the senior win the race easily but his time of 7.5 seconds broke the all-time JoyceMiddle School field house record. His time is also the second fastest in the state this season.
Not far behind him in that event was fellow senior Tim Moan who finished with a time of 7.8. Moan’’s time turned out to be the sixth fastest in the state this season.
“It certainly is special for a coach to be able to have two boys of such quality on your team at the same time,” Wittenhagen said.
Senior James Holland (First in the 300 with a 39.6) and senior Chris McDermott (first in dash with a state qualifying time of 6.8) also won their events for the Raiders.

Last Saturday the Raiders once again competed extremely well in a 50 1/2 - 35 1/2 loss to Winchester in a meet held at Reading. Among the day’’s best performances was Senior James Holland’’s first place finish in the 600 (1:32.03) and Kris Stinehart’’s victory in the shot-put (41 feet 6 inches).
"I have been pleasantly surprised at the way we are performing with the dual meet schedule we have," Coach Tom Wittenhagen said. "We are really progressing nicely and that could really help us when we go to the state relays and the state meet down the road."

WATERTOWN —
It's not often the Watertown High girls indoor track team defeats Belmont, but they came through with a tremendous effort on Tuesday to come away with a 46.5-39.5 victory over their rivals at LexingtonHigh School.
“They certainly exceeded my expectations,” Watertown girls track coach Dave Mastro said of his squad's first win of the season. “They worked really hard and pushed themselves to the limit out there. I'm really proud of all of them.”
Earning first-place points were junior Waleska Alves in the two mile (13:21); sophomore Talia Flores in the 300 meters (45.9); junior Rachel Thomas in the high jump (4 feet 8 inches) and freshman Celie Harvey-McGregor in the shot put (27 feet and 1/2 inch).
Coming in second place for the Raiders were senior Kelsey Prendergast in the 1000 meters (3:52); Thomas in the 600 meters (1:56); junior Jessica Doggett in the one-mile run (6:18); junior Angela Harrington in the high hurdles (7.9); sophomore Lauren Basile in the 45-yard dash (6:32); Flores in the high jump (4' 6”) and junior Roshelly Sanchez in the shot-put (25 feet and 1/2 inch).

“It was a great meet for these girls,” Mastro said. “This was the first time the girls beat Belmont since the 2001-2002 season. The girls really fed off each other in this meet and were very excited to win this one.”
Watertown, 1-5, will take on Woburn on Saturday, Jan. 8 at ReadingHigh School.
“The most wins we have had in my tenure is three,” Mastro said. “I really believe we have the talent to match that this season and the beauty of it is that we are very young and should only get better.”

WatertownHigh School boys track: Division 4 championships
By Scott Souza, Waltham Daily News staff and Frank Santarpio, correspondent

WESTON - At the Division 4 EMass. Championships on Friday at Weston High, the Watertown High boys team had a distinction only a handful of other teams in both genders among all divisions could claim in the state this weekend.
The Raiders went one-two in an event.
Junior Timm Moan won the high hurdles in 14.85 seconds with classmate Nathan Wilson-Braun second in 14.95. The performances earned them the fifth and sixth seeds, respectively, at next weekend's All-States.
“Not only did they do well at Division 4 but they set themselves up well for next week,” Watertown coach Tom Wittenhagen said. “They were seeded second and third, so they topped their seeds and both dropped three-tenths of a second off their times.”
While Wilson-Braun was considered one of the top hurdlers in the state coming out of the indoor season, Moan has joined him on that plateau this spring after opting to run track instead of playing baseball.
“He's not the quickest kid in the world,” Wittenhagen said. “But he's a very efficient hurdler. With the race longer outdoors, that really works to his strengths and his technique. His success has exceeded my expectations, but hopefully he can build off it now.”
Wittenhagen said Moan and Wilson-Braun bring out the best in each other on the track.
“They are childhood friends and really feed off each other well,” he said. “They do all the things that you like to see in a relationship that could be very difficult. Sometimes when you have two kids in an event like that, they clash. Fortunately, these two aren't like that.”
The performance in the state meet also qualified both Moan and Wilson-Braun for the National Track Meet in North Carolina on June 19. Unfortunately the MIAA won’’t allow the school to sponsor the event, meaning that if they want to attend they must pay for it themselves.
Junior Kevin O'Laughlin had the other point for the Raiders as he was sixth in the triple jump at 41-7.75. Senior Rogan O'Reilly was ninth in the shot put at 42-6.25, sophomore James Holland was 10th in the 400 in 51.98 seconds and junior Ken Szubzda was 14th in the mile in 4:48.67.
The Raider boys finished eleventh overall out of 42 Division Four schools
WESTON - The Watertown Girls’’ teams competed in the Division 4 Emass Championships at Weston High on Friday.
Sophomore Rachel Thomas finished seventh in 13.41 seconds. She was also fifth in the high jump at 5-0.
Watertown freshman Talia Flores was ninth in the 400 in 61.72. Sophomore Jessica Doggett was 19th in the mile in 5:48.97. Senior Alison Holland was 17th in the high hurdles in 17.78 and seventh in the triple jump at 34-1.25. Sophomore Meaghan Kelly was 10th in the 400 hurdles in 71.33. Junior Brittany Obi-Tabot was 10th in the shot put at 30-5 and 12th in the discus at 92-11. Senior Taylor Connors was eighth in the javelin at 103-3.

``It was an outstanding day,'' said Watertown coach David Mastro. ``They rose to the occasion. There were so many personal records. Kids qualified for States in some events, and just missed in others. That was great.''

Forward march for Watertown Track

WATERTOWN —
Watertown High boys outdoor track and field coach Tom Wittenhagen thought this could be the one. He just didn't realize how big of a one it could be.
After winning the season-opening meet against Melrose, the Raider boys had lost five straight meets. But he looked at the Watertown times and measures, and compared them thoroughly with Wakefield's times and measures heading into yesterday's make-up meet at Victory Field, and liked what he saw.
“We scored the meet out four or five times and every time we scored it, it came down to the relay,'' he said.“When you have 70 points for yourself and you get 80, that's a good feeling.''
The Raiders improved to 2-5 with the 80-56 victory and best last year's win total for the season.
